Ukrainian wedding traditions
Ukrainian family customs and church traditions are distinct. The Orthodox terms below introduce one form of church marriage, alongside the cultural tradition of wedding bread. Ukrainian Catholic and other ceremonies need their own confirmed sequence.
Family customs before the ceremony
Vykup or playful ransom
A reported regional custom involving riddles, joking negotiations or small gifts before the couple meet. Families may adapt it or leave it out.
Decoy reveal
A humorous substitute is presented during some versions of the playful ransom.
Candy-filled wedding shoes
A reported regional custom in which the groom presents shoes containing sweets.
Parental blessing
A family blessing before leaving for church, sometimes involving icons, bread and an embroidered cloth.
Rushnyk
An embroidered ritual cloth used in family or church traditions.
Starosta
An elder or ceremonial spokesperson who can lead family words and blessings.
Wedding procession
A family procession toward church, sometimes accompanied by singing.
An Orthodox church celebration
Betrothal
The church portion involving prayers and rings.
Vinchannia or crowning
The crowning portion of the marriage service.
Joining hands
The couple’s hands are joined during the service.
Gospel of Cana
The Gospel account of the wedding at Cana.
Common cup
The couple share wine from a ceremonial cup.
Threefold procession
The priest leads the couple three times around the ceremonial table.
Wedding icons
Icons may be presented to the couple as part of the celebration.
Final church blessing
The blessing concluding the church service.
Bread, welcome and celebration
Korovai
Ceremonial wedding bread, with regional variations in decoration and use.
Bread-and-salt welcome
A ceremonial greeting at a home or reception entrance.
Korovai sharing
Wedding bread is divided or shared according to the family’s chosen custom.
Hirko
A traditional reception call, meaning bitter, inviting the couple to kiss.
Bride covering
A traditional change of bridal headwear marking married status, included by some families.
Vinok
A floral wreath associated with traditional bridal attire.
Kerchief or head covering
A covering used in some versions of the bride-covering custom.
Wedding songs and gift verses
Regional songs or spoken verses accompanying family celebrations and gifts.
