Canadian and non-denominational wedding traditions
Canadian couples draw on many cultures and faiths. These general planning terms describe choices often discussed for personal or non-denominational weddings; none is required or uniquely Canadian.
First look
A planned moment for the couple to see each other before the ceremony.
First touch
A planned meeting before the ceremony where the couple can hold hands or speak without seeing each other.
Personal vows
Promises written by the couple in their own words, shared publicly or privately.
Processional
The entrance of the couple and other participants at the start of the ceremony.
Recessional
The couple’s exit at the end of the ceremony, often followed by greetings and celebration.
Planning photography and video
Decide which exchanges are private, when portraits will happen and whether personal vows need audio recording. Share the entrance and exit order so coverage follows the people and moments you have chosen.
A guide to your own wedding
Use this glossary to start a conversation, rather than as a checklist. Tell us which traditions you are including, what they mean to you and which moments should remain private.
