Filipino wedding traditions
These terms describe customs included in some Filipino Catholic or Christian weddings. They are not part of every Filipino wedding. Discuss the ceremony sequence and permitted customs with your officiant.
Sponsors
People chosen for supporting roles in the wedding. Principal and secondary sponsors may have different responsibilities.
Veil
A ceremonial veil placed across the couple in some weddings.
Cord
A ceremonial cord, often arranged in a figure-eight shape, placed around the couple.
Arras
Wedding coins passed between the couple during a chosen ceremony ritual.
Candles
Candles lit as part of some wedding ceremonies, with designated sponsors taking part.
Planning photography and video
Share a sponsor list with names and roles, the order of entrances and the timing of the veil, cord, coins and candles you are including. Allow portrait time for the people supporting you.
A guide to your own wedding
Use this glossary to start a conversation, rather than as a checklist. Tell us which traditions you are including, what they mean to you and which moments should remain private.
