Portuguese wedding traditions
The Portuguese terms below describe parts of a Catholic marriage celebration. They are not customs exclusive to Portuguese families. Your faith, parish, language and personal choices determine the ceremony.
Entrada
The entrance or processional at the beginning of the celebration.
Leituras
Scripture readings in the liturgy of the Word.
Consentimento
The couple’s expression of consent to marry.
Alianças
Wedding rings; their blessing and exchange are part of the Catholic marriage rite.
Bênção nupcial
The nuptial blessing, a prayer for the couple’s married life.
Planning photography and video
Share the ceremony language, readings and music with us beforehand. Identify relatives delivering speeches so we can prepare audio coverage and preserve their own voices.
A guide to your own wedding
Use this glossary to start a conversation, rather than as a checklist. Tell us which traditions you are including, what they mean to you and which moments should remain private.
