Spanish wedding traditions

Spanish heritage and Spanish-language weddings are not a single tradition. These terms introduce a Catholic ceremony; customs vary between Spain, Spanish-speaking communities and individual families.

Consentimiento

The couple’s expression of consent to marry.

Lecturas

The scripture readings during a Catholic marriage celebration.

Anillos

Wedding rings, blessed and exchanged during the marriage rite.

Arras

Wedding coins used in some Catholic ceremonies as a sign of the goods the couple will share. Their use is optional and varies by community.

Bendición nupcial

The nuptial blessing, a prayer for the couple and their life together.

Planning photography and video

Tell us which customs your family has chosen, who will bring the rings or coins, and whether readings and speeches will be in Spanish. We will plan audio and portraits around those choices.

A guide to your own wedding

Use this glossary to start a conversation, rather than as a checklist. Tell us which traditions you are including, what they mean to you and which moments should remain private.
