Arras: wedding coins

A chosen coin ritual in some Catholic weddings, shared across several cultural traditions.

What it is

Arras are wedding coins used in some Catholic ceremonies as a sign of the goods the couple will share. Their use varies across Spanish-speaking, Filipino and other communities; they are not part of every Catholic wedding.

Where it fits in your day

Ask your parish whether and how the coins will be included, who will bring them and where the blessing or exchange belongs in the service. Follow the ceremony your officiant has confirmed.

Planning photography and video

Identify the person carrying the coins and let us know about the container or tray. We can plan a detail photograph beforehand and coverage of the hands, exchange and expressions during the ceremony.

The details that matter to your family

Tell us if the coins are an heirloom, a gift from relatives or a new set chosen for your wedding. Their family history can guide which people and objects should appear in the photographs.

Questions for your planning conversation

Who will bring the coins? Are they a family keepsake? What sequence has your parish approved?
