Indian wedding traditions

Indian weddings encompass many religions, regions and languages. The Hindu and Sikh terms below belong to different traditions; they should not be treated as one universal ceremony.

Haldi

A pre-wedding application of turmeric paste in some Hindu wedding celebrations.

Mehndi

Henna decoration, often applied to hands and feet during pre-wedding celebrations.

Sacred fire

A fire used in many Hindu marriage ceremonies as part of the ritual setting.

Saptapadi

The seven steps taken together in many Hindu marriage ceremonies. Regional sequences and customs differ.

Anand Karaj

The Sikh marriage ceremony, including the four Lavan hymns and ceremonial rounds around Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Planning photography and video

Send us the schedule for each event and day, outfit changes, travel and the ceremony sequence. Confirm respectful dress, access and camera positions with the temple, gurdwara or other ceremony venue.
